Depositphotos_22884876_original (2)School Administration and the Law might be best characterized as the scariest course I’ve ever taken.  The reason behind this fear is the knowledge I now possess about the many ways that we as educators are vulnerable to an incredible amount of circumstances that are out of our control.  Beyond the fear however, we looked at just how the laws and case precedent that apply to the world of public education are becoming more and complex and more demanding of educators and administrators every day.

The course was packed with information, and while truthfully I wasn’t able to internalize all of it, we were left with a great resource for future administrators that can be referred back to any time.  We also learned about certain rules of thumb that one should keep in mind in order to make their professional lives easier and that go a long way to “disaster-proofing” their careers.  We looked at plenty of examples of case precedent and examined the major statutes that affect us educators.  The Public Schools Act for example is no longer an intimidating document to me because I know how to navigate it successfully and am familiar with how it is often interpreted.

The artefacts that I am chose to represent my time in the course deal with my personal contribution to our collective knowledge of case law and statutes.  I was responsible for creating presentations that looked at the Johnson v. Webb case that took place in the Manitoba Court of Queen’s Bench, and the Domestic Violence and Stalking Act.  Each of these cases furthered my knowledge about just where the legal lines are in our chosen profession.
