career guidanceThis was my favourite course that I participated in during by Master’s Program.  I enjoyed the course so immensely because literally every piece of reading, every assignment, and every segment of direct instruction had a clear pragmatic purpose for the students in my classroom.  Our exploration of What Color is Your Parachute and The Real Game, as well as our look through various career-related websites, allowed us to stockpile valuable resources and tools that my students have already benefited from.

I included two artefacts.  The first of which is the notes I used to present a website that should be used when teaching students about the current job market in Canada.  It’s called Job Bank and you can check it out here.  A common criticism of the education system in our country is that we don’t adequately prepare students for the job market and after school career expectations.  This site makes that task quite simple and has updated information for a huge variety of jobs and careers that can be filtered by job type, educational level, and/or geographic location.

The second artefact is the outline of a lesson plan that I created to go with a part of The Real Game (which is a fantastic resource I was introduced to during this course).  We were allowed a choice in the matter, and so naturally I drifted towards the financial plan portion.  Students were engaged by the idea of how to save money and make it work for them.  I included some activities that my students have traditionally found exciting.

This course really inspired and engaged the vast majority of the students, and consequently the lessons and website tours that each student were responsible for were done to exceedingly high standards.  I really benefited from the combined knowledge and preparation of the class.
